I spent some time chatting with Jay Nanduri and Suresh Velagapudi from the Mobile Search team to talk about the history of Mobile Search and Browsing, the difficulties developing for Mobile Devices and what the future holds. Art was gracious enough to give me a tour of his Seattle Washington gallery and divulge a few of the secrets behind some of the beautiful, iconic images hanging on his gallery walls.

Animoto: An Automated Video Creation Tool

Have you seen this? A web app called Animoto is announcing “the end of slideshows” thanks to their automatic video creation tool. You don’t have to create anything yourself – just point it to your media on the web (or upload from your PC) and Animoto’s Cinematic A.I. technology will create a completely customized video for you including a background track!

After you sign up for Animoto and start creating your first video, you’re promoted to either upload your photos from your computer or direct the app to use images you have stored on an online photo service like flickr, smugmug, Picasa, photobucket, or even Facebook! If you have your photos organized into albums, you can configure Animoto to retrieve the images just from one particular album.

You have to wait for a moment while the application retrieves your images. Ideally, for their 30-second video, you should have around 15 images – more than that, and some could be left off. If you want to make a longer video it’s only $3 – regardless of how many images are used.

For the music selection, you can upload a track from your PC or select one from their online collection, which lets you browse by genre (top 40, indie rock, hip hop, etc.) to find something appropriate. Note: though “Top 40” is a category, I’m either officially old or these are unsigned artists.

Finally, you’ll have your end product – a customized video created with their unique technology. Their app analyzes and combines the images and takes into account every detail about a song – genre, structure, energy, rhythm, instrumentation, and vocals. Every video created will have a distinct set of motion. The video can then be emailed to friends, posted to your social network profile, downloaded to your computer, uploaded to YouTube, embedded on your blog, and more.

Animoto isn’t a new service – they’ve been in the works since 2005 and started receiving a lot of blog coverage last year. However, I personally had not tried the site for myself until today, and now that I have, I have to say I’m highly impressed. The app was fast, slick, and dead-simple to use, and the end product looks great. Looks like I’ll be pimping my MySpace page this weekend!

Composer, songwriter, sound designer, producer, musical director, and performer in almost any genre of music imaginable, for over two hundred live and digital media productions in the past 20 years, Patrick Pennefather(BFA,MFA) is a specialist for the Masters of Digital Media Program @ Great Northern Way Campus in Vancouver. Also, as composer in residence and adjunct professor of Sound Design in the Theatre, Film and Creative Writing Department at the University of British Columbia, his mission is to teach up and coming digital media producers the value of integrating music and sound in all stages of production.

A multi-award winning composer, his compositions, musicals, songs, sfx, underscores, and jingles have been heard in short and long form productions for clients such as: CBC Radio, Bravo Television, Palmer Jarvis/DDB, RMCC, Cathay Pacific, McDonald's Special Events, UBC, Florida and California State U, Amnesty International, Virtual Stage, Vancouver Playhouse, Touchstone Theatre, Electric Company Theatre, Vancouver Theatre Sports League, and the Vancouver International Comedy Festival.

Microsoft Videos Launched

Earlier this year at the MIX08 Conference, Microsoft announced an upcoming video portal designed to make finding Microsoft videos even easier. Earlier this month, that portal launched, so if you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, you can do so here: preview.microsoft.com/video.

The site features official Microsoft videos, including those you’ve seen here on Channel 10, as well as sister sites 8 and 9, but that’s only a small sampling of the content. The site also features product videos for Windows, Office, server products, mobile products, web products, hardware, tools, Xbox, and more as well as how-tos, showcases, ads, security videos, events, research projects, and other solutions. You can browse any of these particular areas from this page or you can browse by intended audience – IT Pros, Developers, Home Users, etc.

After finding a video to watch, only one click and you can email it, Digg it, or grab embed code so you can post the video on your own web site or blog as you wish. However, LiveSide points out one of the most useful features for the new video portal – RSS feeds for searches. They give the example of a feed for Windows Live.

NitroDesk Launches New Media Edition

NitroDesk is a program that helps photographers easily manage, upload, transfer, and sync their photos and/or videos from their PC to several online media sharing websites including PlanetEye, SmugMug, Zenfolio, Picasa Web Albums, Flickr, Facebook, ShutterPoint, and Windows Live Spaces for photos and Vimeo and YouTube for video. Nitrodesk also support workflow tools like Adobe LightRoom, Google Picasa2, and Microsoft Expression Media 2. With this latest release of Media Edition, users can now drag and drop photos, albums, or video from one site to another or upload to multiple sites simultaneously. For anyone who works with publishing their media to several different sites, NitroDesk Media Edition may just be worth the one-time fee of $29.99 to save you the hassle. Silverlight Training Videos

Thanks to Tim Sneath's blog, I stumbled upon a resource that is sure to please anyone interested in developing in Silverlight and wanting to learn more. The website, created by Mike Taulty and Mike Ormond, is http://www.silverlightscreencasts.com and there you will find 50 free videos that cover all things Silverlight from layout and controls to data binding and styling, and much more. There are even some great tips and tricks that go beyond what you'll find in the documentation. Of course, you'll need Silverlight 2 to view these, so load it up and then check it out!

Search Share for Facebook

A Live Search powered Facebook app called Search Share lets you search for all kinds of information that you can then share with your Facebook friends. Results for Search Share can include videos, images, web pages, news, and more. But Search Share isn't just a way to see traditional search engine results within Facebook, you can also preview the content and select the results you want via drag-and-drop in order to share them with your friends.

The items you want to share are dropped into a box at the top of the app and you can then choose to email those items to a friend or post them to your feed. What's really wild is that when you hover your mouse over a thumbnail of a video, it automatically starts playing. I wasn't expecting that - I figured you would have to go off site to watch videos, but it's all right there in Facebook.

On the main Search Share page, some interesting topics are already listed for you like Today's Hot Topics. For example, today's #1 topic is "polar bear status" (how sad!). There are also boxes showing Top Celebrities, Words of the Day, Your Friends' Latest Searches, and Your Saved Search History.

Search Share is somewhat similar to Zine, in that it facilitates you being able to share various items with friends, but unlike Zine, it's more of a tool that can be used as needed instead of an online digital magazine.

Office Labs is Live

A new web site called Office Labs has just gone live. Here, you will find all sorts of projects, prototypes, proof-of-concepts, downloads, and more, all of which are centered around productivity. The site features tools for the Microsoft Office system and SharePoint, too. To get the launch started with a bang, Office Labs is already offering a bunch of cool projects you'll want to check out, including the following:

Community Clips - Community Clips is a place where you can find "how to" videos made by other users like yourself; you can also easily create your own.
Search Commands - This is quite possibly the hottest of the current Office Labs offerings, considering how strong user demand was for just this sort of tool. Videos of the New Windows Mobile IE and Windows Mobile 6.1 in Action

From the CTIA conference comes a preview of the Windows Mobile 6.1 IE6 Beta Demo. The new browser features zooming in and out, panning, and support for Flash - a first for phones. This video shows the new Internet Explorer being demo'ed at the conference while its new features are explained.

After watching that, I browsed through the related videos, and found this video - an extended hands-on demo of the new version of Windows Mobile, which shows the new "today" screen, the "getting started" wizards, the transfer music option, text messages, settings, and pretty much all the other features, too. Good stuff!

I took a little trip to Vancouver this past weekend and spoke with Gerri Sinclair, the executive director at The Great Northern Way Campus. Eye-Fi Wireless Memory Card

The Eye-Fi Card is a wireless memory card. It automatically uploads pictures from your digital camera to your PC or Mac and to your favorite photo sharing, printing, blogging or social networking site. Here's why this is so great. Because you don't have to drag any wires and have access to a computer to share great pics. And it's all for under a hundred bucks. You can't take video yet with the 2GB SD card but that certainly is the future. They have over twenty partners for photo-sharing including Flickr and Windows Live. I chat with one of the founders of Eye-Fi.

Soapbox Now on MSN Video

Soapbox is now no longer a stand-alone site, but has been fully integrated into MSN Video beta. The integration is part of a refresh of the MSN Video site that brings several new features including a Video Showcase of videos of interest & the most watched videos, quicker processing speeds, new navigation, an expandable screensize, support for more codecs & extensions, updated RSS feeds that display Soapbox videos in feeds via an embedded player, and better sort filters for narrowing down your searches.

Search has also been improved on the new MSN Video, as it now a combines results for MSN Video, Soapbox User Videos, as well as web video results, all on one page. Now that Soapbox videos are available on MSN Video, you will see that "Soapbox User Videos" has its own tab in the upper-right, right there alongside the site's premium content offerings. When you're uploading a video to MSN Video, you have the option to make the video "hidden," a feature that will hide your video from the search results.

However, uploading videos doesn't have to be done on the website itself. With the tight integration of the Windows Live services, you can manage your video library in Windows Live Photo Gallery (yes, Photo Gallery!). A new feature in the latest version of photo gallery provides you with a "Publish" button that lets you easily upload your videos to Soapbox. Once uploaded, you can post videos to your blog, websites, or Live Spaces using Windows Live Writer and its handy "Insert from Web" option. (Via the Soapbox blog)

Organize Your Media with Photo Gallery & Spaces

Windows Live Photo Gallery beta, one of Microsoft's new Windows Live Services, improves upon the built-in Photo Gallery in Windows Vista. The software, available for both Vista and XP users, offers many new features like better tagging, sorting, and image editing, including the ability to do panoramic stitches, histograms, image sharpening, cropping, exposure adjustments, color adjustments, and red eye fixes. You can add captions, turn your photos into screensavers or slideshows, and publish your photos and videos online. Videos can be easily uploaded to Soapbox (see how here).

The new Photo Import Tool automatically groups all the photos taken on your digital camera by date and time as you copy the files over to your PC. You can also select specific individual photos you want to import instead of being forced to import the entire batch of photos (like in the previous version of Windows Photo Gallery). RAW format is still supported, and additionally, Windows Live Spaces users will be pleased to find that high-res photos are now supported up to 1600x1600, if uploading from the Live Photo Gallery client.

Downloading from Spaces is easy, too. With the Photo Enthusiast Template, the integration with HP's Snapfish service for ordering prints, and the ability to point a Windows Live Domain to your Spaces page, Spaces becomes a great way to organize, manage, and showcase your digital photography. The easiest way to get the software is via the Windows Live Installer.

Liam Sullivan likes shoes!

Liam Sullivan is a writer, producer, editor, director, and most of all- comedian who has gained incredible success through online distribution of his videos.

His goal is to put on a show that people will enjoy, with characters that are fun to watch. His material could be described as “provocative,” or “strange,” but it’s comedy, so he's really just aiming for “hilarious.” Some have said he's like a white Dave Chappelle.

Since YouTube caught wind of him and his creating a myspace page for both himself and Kelly, his outrageous and hysterical videos have taken over the internet.
